The program will culminate in Vivaldi’s popular Gloria, RV 589, a grand work for chorus, three women soloists, and an orchestra comprising trumpet, oboe, strings, and continuo. When he made his VCS debut last year, his program included a repertoire staple, Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass, alongside short works by two living composers, and in Sunday’s concert he will offer another interesting mix of old and new, familiar and obscure. The VCS has always been devoted primarily to the standard repertoire, but under Wismath it, too, has been tackling more new and unfamiliar music. In 2012, he also became music director of the Victoria Choral Society, an ensemble that is much older (now in its 79th season) and much larger (about 140 voices). With these groups, he has explored an adventurous repertoire focused with particular passion on contemporary music.
